1/7/2024 0 Comments Yellowjackets jessica cruz![]() It also balances two timelines, each surreal and terrible in their own ways. In both its flashbacks to the team’s desolate hell on earth and the almost bleaker present, “Yellowjackets” presents realities so taut with tension they seem likely to snap at any given moment. This flashback also contains no dialogue at all, and is more powerful for it - an indication of where the show’s overall strengths and weaknesses lie. ![]() As far as in medias res openings go, Kusama’s deft portrayal of a world gone cold is an undeniably evocative jolt to the senses that sets the tone for what’s yet to come. It blends teen tropes, horror, and psychological drama with a confidence that makes it hard to stop watching, even at its most gruesome. This pilot episode, which only gets more disturbing from these opening minutes, was directed with chilling precision by Karyn Kusama, whose resumé - including films such as “Jennifer’s Body” and “The Invitation” - makes her uniquely qualified to helm a show like “Yellowjackets.” The new Showtime series from Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson follows a high school soccer team that gets stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash and then, 25 years later, the remaining survivors having to cope with it as thoroughly traumatized adults. She lands on the sharpened sticks below with a sickening thud, hand twitching as a cloaked figure in pink Converse sneakers shuffles up to view her kill. Just when it seems like her panic might swallow her whole, the ground beneath her feet does so instead. The first episode opens with a girl running barefoot through a frozen forest, whipping through the trees, stumbling through the snow as piercing shrieks and battle cries echo through the mountains. ![]() Then again, this is just a theory! If I’m wrong about literally everything I just wrote, then so be it.The flashback anchoring “ Yellowjackets” is a short horror film unto itself. So, what’s a secret “worse” than cannibalism that the Yellowjackets could be hiding? No clue, but considering that there is also a current-day mystery unfolding on the show, my own personal theory is that whatever they’re hiding happened right after they were rescued-not in the woods. And so far, none of the evidence has proven that Yellowjackets is about cannibalism, but the show is definitely having fun making us think it is. ![]() IMO, the creators of the show are showing us that sometimes the truth is as simple as the evidence in front of us. He’s not Javi, he’s not someone’s secret kid, he’s not anyone. Case in point: the penultimate episode, where we find out that Adam is just…Adam. Yellowjackets has already proven that it’s willing to lean alllll the way into red herrings. ^Side note: The sheer number of animal pelts in this scene implies that the Yellowjackets have a lot more hunting ahead of them until they run out of food and need to resort to eating each other. Book deals followed, and nowadays, the ordeal is generally seen as one of survivalism and human endurance. In case you haven’t already done a Wikipedia deep dive on this crash, survivors made a pact that they could eat one another should they die and were publicly forgiven. And if they did resort to cannibalism, why hide it? Cannibalism as survival has historically been socially “understood”-most recently after the Andes flight disaster, which cocreator Ashley Lyle confirmed influenced Yellowjackets (Jessica even brings it up while talking to Misty). Here’s why I think the show might be fucking with us and why the Yellowjackets did something way “worse” than cannibalism:Įveryone in the town already thinks the Yellowjackets are cannibals, so if it’s a secret, it’s an open one. We then see a group of girls (aka the Yellowjackets) dressed in pelts and eating meat-the strong implication/assumption being ritualistic cannibalism, a secret that seemingly haunts the surviving team members and one they vow to keep from the public. Her body is then picked up off the ground, strung up in a tree, and drained of blood. She falls into a hidden pit trap and is immediately impaled on spikes. Let’s set the scene: In the first shot of Yellowjackets, we see a girl getting chased through the woods by an unseen pursuer.
